Do you suffer from fear of missing out—also known as FOMO—wondering if other healthcare providers are getting more out of social media websites than you?

Could you get a better job if you networked on LinkedIn? Attract more patients by promoting your practice on Facebook? Be the first person to know about drug recalls that affect your patients from Twitter?

Oncology Nurse Advisor’s Social Media Survey attempts to answer those questions. Overall, 100 nurse practitioners, registered nurses, physicians, and physician assistants responded to our survey in September through October 2014, answering questions about how they used eight well-known social media services: Facebook, Google+, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Doximity.

Both women and nurse practitioners were overrepresented in our sample, making up 87.88% and 69.63% of respondents, respectively. Just under half of respondents worked in an office practice (42.12%), followed by a hospital (16.62%) or standalone clinic (17.77%), hospitals (16.33%) or walk-in/ambulatory settings (7.16%).

The majority of our sample, nearly 80%, were aged 35 to 64 years, with those aged 35 to 54 years making up 49%, and those aged 55 to 64 years making up 29.8%.

Overall, composite mean platform adoption across the 8 social media sites included in the survey was 45.34% for business purposes and 67.53% for personal use.

Not every participant answered every question. We have indicated total number of respondents for each area addressed. Numbers may not add up to 100% due to rounding.

This is the second installment of Vital Signs, our new crowdsourced feature that aims to bring you easy to absorb visual insights on the latest trends among your clinician peers.
