This patient’s comfort care was beautiful for many reasons. She was held with open hands. Nursing and family worked together to create an environment of peace and acceptance that embraced each person.
That day, the word “patient” was relative. The woman in the bed was not alert or oriented. But her family was. All education was directed toward them, namely her husband. All care was coordinated according to their wishes. All of the sudden, everything connected, and it clicked in my mind how incredibly holistic and beautiful and tragic and heartbreaking nursing is.
I believe one reason I chose the nursing profession was to be present. To experience the beautiful parts of humanity. The beauty amidst the ugliness, chaos, and unpredictability. To cherish and see value in the human experience throughout suffering is life giving and wonderfully left in the open and patiently waiting hands of nurses.
