Current public health campaigns on skin cancer and melanoma prevention call for wearing clothing in combination with use of sunscreen. Research published in Nature suggests that this approach is correct and that sunscreen alone may not provide enough protective benefit.

The study examined UV effects on mice and subsequent development of melanoma, and the effects of sunscreen use. Research data indicated that sunscreen does not full protect the wearer from UV exposure. UV light alters DNA in skin pigment and causes other harm, such as impacting the p53 gene, increasing the likelihood of skin cancer. A combination of clothing and sunscreen provide maximum UV radiation protection.
