Novel nanotechnology could help men with prostate cancer make better decisions in treatment options, a study published in PLUS One suggested.
Researchers from Northwestern University led by Vadim Backman, PhD, used an optical technique he pioneered called partical wave spectroscopic (PWS) microscopy. The technology is able to detect cell features as precise as 20 nanometers which would help to distinguish cells that would appear normal with standard microscopy techniques.
The researchers analyzed prostate tissue biopsies from two cohorts of men with prostate cancer. They found a dramatic increase in nano-architectural disorder in progressors as compared to non-progressors.
As the first study to use PWS microscopy to predict cancer prognosis, the authors stated that the technology could be effective in avoiding unnecessary aggressive treatment in men with prostate cancer, which could lead to adverse events.
A Northwestern University-led study in the emerging field of nanocytology could one day help men make better decisions about whether or not to undergo aggressive prostate cancer treatments.
