Surgical care for breast cancer varies substantially across the country according to the province or territory in which a woman lives. To better understand breast cancer surgery trends in Canada, researchers reviewed data from the Canadian Institute for Health (CHI) on 57,840 women who underwent breast cancer surgery between 2007 and 2010. Results showed mastectomy rates were highest in the youngest (younger than 49 years) and oldest (older than 70 years) age groups; women in Quebec had the lowest rates of mastectomy compared with women in Newfoundland and Labrador, who had the highest rates. Greater distance from radiation facilities also correlated with higher rates of mastectomies. The Canadian findings are consistent with population-based studies in the United States and the United Kingdom; however, rates of prophylactic mastectomy of the other breast following initial mastectomy are about half that in the United States.
