Subcutaneous power ports seem to rarely function properly when administering irinotecan. I find CathFlo is needed every 2 weeks. The port functions properly when the regimen changes. Is there an explanation for why this happens? —Name withheld on request

The literature has no documentation specific to malfunctions of subcutaneous power ports and irinotecan specifically. However, regardless of the agent being infused, using the proper needle with the subcutaneous power ports, properly assessing reservoir size, and using appropriate power loc safety system per institution guidelines are important. If these are not used, this can lead to port malfunction and infusion complications can occur. —Jiajoyce R . Conway, DNP, CRNP, AOCNP
