With the advent of many immunotherapeutic agents, is trastuzumab (Herceptin) classified as an immunotherapy? If so, how does it work? — Name withheld on request

Two hypothesis are discussed regarding trastuzumab as immunotherapy. The literature supports that trastuzumab is an immunotherapeutic agent that stimulates the immune system to promote adaptive immunity; whereas there is also the presupposition that it works by blocking the signaling pathways. Research has labeled trastuzumab as an immunogenic agent but its function in breast cancer is still being discussed. —Jiajoyce R. Conway, DNP, CRNP, AOCNP
