Program Description

Immunotherapies have dramatically changed the treatment landscape for a number of cancer types, highlighting the urgent need to get the most up-to-date clinical data on these agents, predictive biomarkers, and counseling patients on what to expect from treatment into the hands of oncology nurse navigators. This webcast highlights the prevalence of biomarkers across different tumor types, evaluates the role of biomarkers as a predictive tool to guide treatment decisions, and highlights the importance of counseling patients and caregivers on the possibility of immune-related adverse events and how to manage them.

Intended Audience

Oncology nurse navigators, oncology nurses, care coordinators, and nurse practitioners

Educational Objectives

After participating in this activity, clinicians should be better able to:

  • Discuss historical perspective on immunotherapy and its rationale for utilization in cancer treatment
  • Describe biomarker prevalence and expression level across different tumor types/histology(ies) and ongoing efforts to identify the biomarker(s) that best predict clinical response to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition
  • Evaluate the role of biomarkers as a predictive tool to identify patients most likely to benefit from PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor therapy and guide treatment decisions
  • Summarize ongoing efforts aiming to characterize patient response to immunotherapies
  • Counsel patients on treatment expectations, the possibility of immune-related adverse events, and how to manage them
