Therapeutic Use:

Indications for XIFAXAN 550mg:

Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Adult:

≥18yrs: 550mg three times daily for 14 days. Recurrent episodes: can retreat up to two times with the same dosage regimen.

Children:

<18yrs: not established.

Warnings/Precautions:

Not studied in patients with MELD scores >25; only 8.6% of patients in the controlled trial had MELD >19. Increased systemic exposure in patients with more severe hepatic dysfunction; caution should be exercised in patients with severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C). Elderly. Pregnancy. Nursing mothers: not recommended.

Interactions:

Potentiated by P-gp inhibitors (eg, cyclosporine).

Pharmacological Class:

Rifamycin.

Adverse Reactions:

Peripheral edema, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, ascites, increased ALT.

Reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence.

Adult:

≥18yrs: 550mg twice daily.

Children:

<18yrs: not established.
