2017 ONA NAVIGATION SUMMIT Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) GUIDELINES

This activity is jointly provided by the Oncology Nursing Society and Haymarket Media.

This conference is supported by educational grants from AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb, Celgene Corporation, Genomic Health, Inc., Lilly, Novocure and Tesaro.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed to address the needs of nurse navigators, care coordinators, oncology nurses, advanced practice nurses, cancer program administrators, and cancer service line directors involved in the management of people with cancer.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

The oncology nurse navigator core competencies (ONS, 2013), which focus on 4 categories —professional role, education, coordination of care, and communication — provide an essential framework for the practice of navigation. The competencies, however, tell navigators what to do, but do not specify how to do it. This is the fundamental, unmet need in oncology navigation practice. Meeting this need requires bridging of educational gaps: knowledge and focus on the core competencies; using critical thinking and relationship building to attain the core competencies; and applying the core competencies in different types and stages of cancer, from initial diagnosis through survivorship or palliation.

Continuing Nursing Education

ONS is accredited with distinction as a provider of Continuing Nursing Education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. The Oncology Nursing Society is providing contact hours for this program and maintains responsibility for adherence to ANCC criteria.

For more information about the accreditation of this program, please contact the Oncology Nursing Society at 1-866-257-4ONS or help@ons.org.

Instructions to Receive Credit

In order to receive credit, participants must complete an evaluation/application for credit at the conclusion of the conference.

Faculty

Faculty list will be published soon.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this activity, ONNs should be better able to:

  1.   Identify how the 4 core competency categories of the oncology nurse navigator: professional role; education; coordination of care; and communication can be used to facilitate more efficient navigation and role autonomy.
  2.    Apply critical thinking skills, including clinical reasoning and logical decision-making, to attain the ONN core competencies.
  3.   Build and sustain relationships with patients, caregivers, multidisciplinary team members, health care administrators, and third-party payers to attain the ONN core competencies.
  4.   Plan navigation that exhibits the ONN core competencies in specific, major cancer groups including solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.
