State law requires advising women of dense breast tissue, breast cancer risk

the ONA take:

Massachusetts legislators introduced a bill that requires doctors to tell patients when a mammogram reveals that the woman has breast dense tissue. Governor Deval Patrick signed the bill into law in late June. Created by Representative Denise Provost, the bill’s intent is to help women know of their risk that mammogram may not reveal early stage breast cancer if they have dense breast tissue. Provost was prompted to create the bill when learning that a neighbor was found to have stage IV breast cancer 7 months after a mammogram showed no abnormalities. The Department of Public Health is to issue new mammography regulations requiring doctors to tell women if the mammogram shows dense breast tissue. These women would then have the option of pursuing further tests to better clarify their risk and status. Legislators say the bill will save lives and likely won’t increase health care costs. Provost says the possibility of increased testing and increased health care costs is worth it. Massachusetts is the 17th state to enact such a law.
