More than 8 hours of sleep a day associated with increased stroke risk

the ONA take:

According to a new study published in the journal Neurology, researchers from the University of Cambridge Department of Public Health and Primary Care in Cambridge, United Kingdom, have found that people who sleep for more than 8 hours a day have an elevated risk for stroke. For the study, researchers followed nearly 10,000 people aged 42-81 years from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk cohort for nearly 10 years. Researchers found that nearly 70% of participants reported sleeping between 6 and 8 hours each day, while only 10% reported sleeping over 8 hours each day. Participants who slept for more than 8 hours or less than 6 hours were more likely to be less active, women, and older. Results showed than over the 10 year study, 346 patients had a stroke. Researchers found that participants who slept for more than 8 hours each day had a 46% increased risk of stroke compared with the average risk. In addition, people who slept less than 6 hours a day at an 18% increased risk of stroke; however, that figure was statistically significant. Participants who slept for more than 8 hours persistently had double the risk of stroke compared with those who slept between 6 and 8 hours a day.
