Mind body techniques added to aerobic exercise improve rehabilitation outcomes in breast cancer survivors

the ONA take:

Researchers sought to determine the impact of aerobic exercise training and yoga on survivorship measures in breast cancer survivors.

The study enrolled 52 patients with breast cancer who were randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise group or an aerobic exercise + yoga group. The aerobic exercise group participated in submaximal exercise for 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week for 6 weeks. In the exercise + yoga group, a 1-hour yoga program was added to the exercise regimen.

The study assessed functional capacity by the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), peripheral muscle strength with a hand-held dynamometer, fatigue severity with the Fatigue Severity Scale, and quality of life (QOL) by with European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire.

Statistically significant increases were seen in functional capacity, 6MWT distance, peripheral muscle strength, and perception of QOL. The aerobic exercise + yoga group showed marked improvement in fatigue perception compared with the aerobic exercise group.

The researchers conclude that body mind techniques such as yoga can support aerobic exercise programs in improving functional recovery and psychosocial wellness of patients with cancer.
