Meaning-centered group psychotherapy provides effective support for psychological well-being in patients with advanced cancer

the ONA take:

Researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Fordham University, both in New York, New York, conducted a study to test the efficacy of meaning-centered group psychotherapy (MCGP) to reduce psychological distress and improve spiritual well-being in patients with advanced or terminal cancer. In the study, 253 patients with advanced cancer were randomized to MCGP or supportive group psychotherapy (SGP). The treatments were eight-session interventions. Patients were assessed before the treatment, at completion of the treatments, and 2 months later.

Primary outcome measures were spiritual well-being and overall quality of life, and second outcome measures assessed depression, hopelessness, desire for hastened death, anxiety, and physical symptom distress. Study findings demonstrated that patients receiving MCGP showed significantly greater improvement in primary outcome measures, with secondary outcome measures significantly reduced. The authors conclude that meaning-centered group psychotherapy is an efficacious treatment for psychological and existential or spiritual distress in patients with advanced cancer.
