Government advisory committee eases on coffee, eggs, and salt, but reiterates limiting sugary drinks

Recommendations from the government advisory committee, which is made up of doctors and nutritionists, were released.

The Agriculture and Health and Human Services Departments will consider those recommendations when finalizing 2015 dietary guidelines, expected by the end of the year.

The basic guidelines established in 2010 remain: Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less saturated fats, salt, and sugar. 

However, recommendations on eggs, coffee, and sodium have changed: Eggs are good; coffee is okay and may even be good for you; and sodium intake should be lowered, if possible.

Saturated fats and sugary drinks, however, retained their status as foods to avoid.

An extra cup or two of coffee may be OK after all. More eggs, too. But you definitely need to drink less sugary soda. And, as always, don't forget your vegetables.
