Researchers investigated the distribution of trace elements in the tissue of bone tumors in a study that is the only one of its kind worldwide. Their results show tumor tissue contains higher concentrations of trace elements, which could be a starting point in the development of targeted therapies for bone cancer. Osteosarcoma, one of the most common cancers to affect the bones, can be fatal if left untreated. Most cases are diagnosed in people age 10 to 25 years. Surgical intervention is the only targeted treatment, and effective drug-based treatment options are small. The researchers from MedUni Vienna, the Vienna Technical University, and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute sought to shed more light on the biology of this cancer. The researchers used synchrotron radiation, a type of x-ray radiation generated in a particle accelerator. Their investigation revealed that the concentration of iron and zinc in the tumor tissue is several times higher than in healthy tissue. The researchers stated, “These new results could offer an approach for new, targeted, and personalized forms of treatment.”
