Electroacupuncture improves quality of life for breast cancer patients using AIs

the ONA take:

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial found that electroacupuncture produces significant improvements in fatigue, anxiety, and depression in as little as 8 weeks for patients with early stage breast cancer experiencing joint pain related to the use of aromatase inhibitors (AIs). This study is the first to demonstrate that electroacupuncture—a form of acupuncture in which a small electric current is passed between pairs of acupuncture needles—is effective for joint pain relief, as well as the other symptoms these patients experience. AIs are the most-commonly prescribed medications for postmenopausal with early stage hormone-receptor positive breast cancer. However, approximately 50% of these women experience joint pain that leads to fatigue, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. As a result, many patients discontinue the therapy increasing their risks of disease recurrence and death of both breast cancer and other causes. Patient-reported experiences of fatigue and psychological distress were measured at the start of the 8-week study, through the study, and at 4 weeks after the treatment. Reductions in fatigue were reported at the end of the 8 weeks and maintained at 12-week follow-up. Significant improvements were reported in anxiety and depression by week 12.
