Early initiation of a palliative care support program for caregivers effectively improves the experience of caregivers, according to research conducted by University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing investigators. The focus of palliative care is to establish a partnership between patients, their medical providers, and their family with the goal of improving quality of life for both the patient and the family. However, palliative care is often initiated too late in the course of cancer treatment. Known as ENABLE III, this study was the first to use a patient and caregiver palliative care intervention in parallel. Participants included 207 patients with recurrent or metastatic cancer and 122 family caregivers who received palliative care support via a phone-based intervention. The participants were randomly divided into two groups; one group received the intervention within 2 weeks (immediate group), and the intervention was started 12 weeks later for the second group (delayed group). The investigators found that outcomes were better for both patients and caregivers in the immediate group.
