Cancer immunotherapy for dogs?

the ONA take:

Although many traditional forms of cancer treatment for humans have also been applicable for dogs, immunotherapy has, until now, not been an option for canines. Researchers at the inter-university Messerli Research Institute of the Vetmeduni Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna, and the University of Vienna have now developed an antibody based cancer treatment for dogs.
Lead study authors Josef Singer and Judith Fazekas found that a receptor frequently found on human tumor cells is almost identical with the EGF receptor in dogs; EGFR is frequently used as a cancer immunotherapy target for humans.

To enable antibodies devloped in the labe to bind to canine cancer cells with greater specificity, the researchers had to customize them for canines—normally antibodies created via mice many be "humanized" for use in humans in a similar fashion. Were the modified antibodies were testing with canine cells, they did indeed binder in a more efficient manner.

The study lead, Professor Erika Jensen-Jarolim, was quoted as saying, "Of special interest to me as a doctor of human medicine is the fact that, by using this approach, we will be able to initiate improvements that will benefit humans as well."

Cancer immunotherapy for dogs?
If you have the financial means, a few therapies derived from human medicine are available for dogs but a truly successful form of therapy by which antibodies inhibit tumor growth has not been available for animals so far. Scientists at the inter-university Messerli Research Institute of the Vetmeduni Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna, and the University of Vienna have developed, for the first time, antibodies to treat cancer in dogs.
