Bariatric surgery also safeguards obese people against cancer

the ONA take:

A review conducted by researchers at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil found an added benefit to weight loss surgery in obese patients. The procedure also reduced the risk of cancer in these patients. The researchers contrasted and combined results from 13 relevant studies that examined the relationship between obesity and cancer. Their review demonstrated that bariatric surgery reduced the risk of cancer in morbidly obese patients. Cancer rates in obese people are as high as 2.12 cases per 1,000 person-years. After bariatric surgery, cancer occurred in 1.06 cases per 1,000 person-years, and the effect lasted for up to 23 years postsurgery. Whether this reduction is due to the metabolic changes associated with weight loss or is a part of the multiple associated changes undergoing the procedure yields in patients is still unknown.

Published in Springer's journal Obesity Surgery, the review was led by Daniela Casagrande of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
